En 1945, cinco cazas de la Armada estadounidense despegaron de una base de Florida para realizar un vuelo rutinario. Sus 14 tripulantes eran aviadores expertos y las condiciones meteorológicas eran idóneas. Y, por supuesto, también se ha recurrido a los extraterrestres, que usarían el Triángulo para capturar personas, barcos y aviones. Hasta aquí el “QuantumFracture del misterio”. Examinemos ahora algunas propuestas con más base científica. En muchas desapariciones se afirma que las brújulas se volvieron locas. ¿Tiene esto algún sentido?

Otra idea tiene que ver con los hidratos de metano: moléculas de gas atrapadas en cristales de hielo que se hallan bajo el fondo marino. Si se produjese un corrimiento de tierra, los cristales podrían romperse y liberar burbujas de metano que reducirían la densidad del agua y podrían llegar a hundir un barco.

También, si el metano pasa al aire y un avión lo atraviesa, podría explotar debido al calor de los motores. Esta propuesta tiene varios problemas: seguramente el metano liberado se disolvería antes de alcanzar la superficie del agua. Aunque existen muchos hidratos en la costa este de Estados Unidos, no se han detectado

Pues atención: tras estudiar el tema concienzudamente, creemos haber averiguado la verdad. ¿Estáis preparados? La resolución al misterio del triángulo de las Bermudas es… … ¡pues que no hay ningún misterio! ¡no hay caso para empezar! Y es que los datos, como las caderas de Shakira, no mienten.

El último informe anual sobre seguridad marítima de la aseguradora Allianz revela que apenas 20 de las 807 pérdidas de barcos registradas entre 2013 y 2022 ocurrieron en las Indias Occidentales, la región más amplia donde se encuadraría el Triángulo de las Bermudas y una de las más transitadas del mundo.

Hay otras 9 zonas más peligrosas, incluido el sudeste asiático, con 204 pérdidas, o el Mediterráneo Oriental y el Mar Muerto, con 118. Y Lloyd’s, otra aseguradora especializada en transportes marítimos, lleva años insistiendo en que el triángulo no entraña un riesgo especial y (ojo, ¡mucho más significativo!)

No cobra ningún suplemento por atravesar la zona. La Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica de Estados Unidos, la NOAA, llega a la misma conclusión: no hay pruebas de que en el Triángulo ocurran más desapariciones misteriosas que en cualquier otra región muy transitada del océano.

Y casi todas guardan relación con las condiciones naturales de una región sacudida por huracanes y tormentas tropicales, y con muchas zonas de aguas poco profundas. La Guardia Costera estadounidense descarta las explicaciones sobrenaturales y añade el factor humano, especialmente importante en un área repleta de embarcaciones de recreo y aviones pequeños.

En su experiencia, la combinación de las fuerzas de la naturaleza y los errores humanos a menudo “supera a la ficción más increíble”. Visto lo visto, lo auténticamente inexplicable es cómo surgió la leyenda del Triángulo de las Bermudas. Y en realidad eso tampoco es ningún misterio.

En una época donde la gente estaba a tope con los OVNIS, había terreno abonado para andarse con menos miramientos con las explicaciones sobrenaturales. Y Charles Berlitz, que ya había publicado un par de libros en torno al mito de la Atlántida, supo verlo.

En 1974 escribió El Triángulo de las Bermudas, donde relacionaba las desapariciones con extraterrestres que pretendían comprobar el estado de nuestra tecnología para evitar que nos autodestruyéramos o con alguna civilización avanzada cuyos restos descansarían en el fondo del mar. Su libro vendió millones de copias y supuso el petardazo definitivo.

Veinticuatro años después de la primera semilla, la leyenda del triángulo de las Bermudas al fin se había labrado un hueco en el imaginario popular. Así es como se crea una leyenda moderna. Pero ¿cómo se destruye? Ah, amigo, eso ya es mucho más difícil. Una vez creado el monstruo, a ver quién lo para.

Y eso que los intentos no se hicieron esperar. Larry Kusche, un bibliotecario de la Universidad Estatal de Arizona, se había comenzado a interesar por el triángulo en el 72, a raíz de las numerosas consultas que recibía sobre el tema.

La escasez de referencias le llevó a investigar por su cuenta y, un año después de que saliera el libro de Berlitz, publicó El misterio del Triángulo de las Bermudas: Solucionado, donde analiza los incidentes uno por uno a partir de toda la información fiable que pudo reunir.

El libro de Kusche reveló muchas incoherencias entre las historias de Berlitz y otros autores y la realidad. Algunas desapariciones ni siquiera ocurrieron, o al menos no hay constancia de ellas. Muchas se produjeron fuera del Triángulo. A menudo se omiten o falsean datos importantes, como la presencia de una tormenta, y se añaden

Al final, Kusche llegó a la conclusión de que «la leyenda del Triángulo de las Bermudas es un misterio inventado […], perpetuado por escritores que, a propósito o sin saberlo, recurrieron a ideas equivocadas, razonamientos incorrectos y sensacionalismo. Se repitió tantas veces que empezó a adquirir un aura de verdad».

Y ahora quizá esté pasando justo lo contrario: el mito del Triángulo ha perdido esa aura gracias a la infinidad de expertos, libros, vídeos y documentales que lo han desmentido por activa y por pasiva. Además, las mejoras técnicas han reducido los accidentes en todo el mundo: las 807 pérdidas

De barcos que hubo entre 2013 y 2022, según el informe de Allianz, representan casi un 50 por ciento menos que las 1563 del decenio anterior. Y aunque sigue habiendo incidentes inexplicables, como el del vuelo 370 de Malaysia Airlines, que desapareció con 239 personas a bordo, las teorías sobrenaturales ya apenas trascienden.

Todo eso ha hecho que un misterio que nos cautivaba hace 50 años ya no resulte tan atractivo. La leyenda no da más de sí. Pero quedará en nuestras memorias para recordarnos dos cosas: que nos encantan los mitos, sobre todo si tienen un punto trágico.
